My wife and I just visited Sherwin Family Vineyards, one of our favorite wineries in the whole Napa Valley. We have known the Sherwin’s for many years. Yes, our dog Prince joined us as he normally does on our recent trip.
Sherwin Family Vineyards is nestled in Napa Valley’s Spring Mountain District. A beautiful mountain in the valley that can make you feel like you are in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Founded by Steve Sherwin, the winery has built its reputation on producing exceptional mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and other rich wines.
In 2020, the Glass Fire swept through Napa Valley, causing devastating destruction. My wife received a text from their wonderful Tasting Room Manager, Donna that the winery burnt down to the ground. I have to admit we both shed a tear that night. Sherwin Family Vineyards was one of many wineries affected, with its winery building, tasting room, and much of the surrounding landscape lost to the flames. This catastrophic event tested the strength and resolve of the Sherwin family and their team, as they faced the loss of not only their business structure but also a place that held deep sentimental value.
In the years following the fire, Sherwin Family Vineyards embarked on the journey to rebuild and restore what had been lost. Embracing a renewed commitment to their craft, the Sherwin family began the painstaking work of reconstructing the winery.
Today, Sherwin Family Vineyards stands as a symbol of hope and determination, rising from the ashes with a beautifully rebuilt winery and a refreshed perspective on what it means to endure. With their reimagined space, Sherwin Family Vineyards continues to welcome visitors, offering a space where the legacy of the original vineyard lives on and a future shaped by resilience and community takes root.
We can take away powerful lessons from the Sherwin Family Vineyards story, especially when it comes to resilience, adaptability, and the value of long-term thinking. College graduates and Professionals early in their career often enter the workforce with a vision of a clear, linear path, only to encounter setbacks or shifts in direction and learn that life and your career is never a straight path.
The Sherwin family faced immense hardship when their winery burned down, but instead of giving up, they chose to rebuild and come back stronger. Their story illustrates that career journeys rarely go exactly as planned. Adapting to unexpected changes and staying committed to one’s goals, even in the face of adversity, can be the key to lasting success.
Another key takeaway is the need for adaptability. Even while they rebuilt their physical space, the Sherwin family found a way to continue serving their clients by hosting tastings at a temporary location. This adaptability ensured that their customer relationships stayed strong, which is a reminder that finding creative solutions in the face of obstacles can keep career goals on track, even when circumstances seem impossible.
Additionally, the Sherwin’s’ journey emphasizes the importance of community and connection. As recent graduates and professionals step into their careers, they can benefit from nurturing relationships with colleagues, mentors, and peers. Like the Sherwin’s, who received support from their community, professionals in their careers can find that strong connections provide not only career opportunities but also support during difficult times. Building a network of trusted relationships can make challenges easier to navigate and turn setbacks into opportunities. The story is a reminder that resilience, adaptability, and community are invaluable as they begin to shape their own careers.
For my wife and I, it is all these things but more importantly it is getting back to our happy place and their outstanding wines. I encourage you to please consider making Sherwin Family Vineyards one of your happy places if you come to visit the beautiful Napa Valley. You won’t regret it.
