San Diego companies are built on research, and their tax leaders need to understand it. From our office on High Bluff Drive, we recruit Directors of Tax, Vice Presidents and Heads of Tax for biotech, medical device, wireless and aerospace organizations across the county.

Few cities pack as much science into so little space as San Diego. Biotech campuses on the Torrey Pines mesa, medical device makers in Carlsbad, wireless and semiconductor engineers in Sorrento Valley, and a long-standing defense and shipbuilding presence all share one local talent market. Their tax questions share a theme: how to account for research, loss carryforwards, intellectual property and international growth.
Pro-Tax Executive Search operates a satellite office at 12707 High Bluff Drive, near the Del Mar corridor, to serve those employers directly. The firm is led by Paul Yroz, who began his career at a Big Eight accounting firm, and our approach to retained search reflects that technical foundation.
Because many San Diego employers are still pre-revenue or newly public, the first senior tax hire often shapes the entire function. We take those searches seriously and look for leaders who can grow with the company.
Tax in a pre-revenue biotech is very different from tax in a mature manufacturer. Section 382 limits, R and D credits, stock compensation and cross-border licensing all need a leader who has handled them before. We know those issues, so when we interview someone we can tell whether the experience is real or only appears on a resume.

Candidates for San Diego roles come from across California and the wider U.S.:

San Diego is a big city in terms of industry, but a small one in terms of how professionals know each other. Tax leaders in the life sciences community talk to one another, and a poorly handled approach travels fast. Discretion matters, and so does a clear explanation of what makes a role worth a move.
California adds technical demands of its own, from state credits to unique filing rules, and cross-border manufacturing with Mexico brings transfer pricing questions that not every candidate has faced. Companies also compete for talent with employers in Orange County, Los Angeles and the Bay Area.
We help by reaching qualified people personally and speaking candidly about the opportunity. For additional perspective, browse the Pro-Tax blog.
From California Headquarters to South Bend Indiana or Western Michigan. Mr. Yroz and his firm has serviced several of my top clients over the years.
